A growing number of organizations are now investing in a password manager. Late, though. our measurement see the same thing over and over again: on average, only 5% of employees actually use it. The rest sticks to old habits - notes, Excel lists, or reused passwords.

Password managers often focus mainly on attractive features and hardly on (organization-wide) adoption. Bitwarden is a nice product with extensive features, but it does not provide insight into the accounts and passwords that are not in the vault. As an organization so you don't know how effectively Bitwarden is really being used and without that insight, you also don't know what the investment will bring. Despite the low price per license, this investment can ultimately be very costly.

MindYourPass takes a different approach. We call that password manager 2.0. Instead of just managing passwords, it starts with measuring: what does the application landscape look like and how do people deal with passwords now? Next, you can not only set password policies, but also enforce them by software - to make it easier for the user.

A comparison

Functionality Bitwarden MindYourPass
Measuring 🟡 Registers basic activity such as login moments and vault usage. No insight into password behavior outside the vault or policy compliance. ✅ Anonymously measures how employees handle passwords, including reuse, strength, and compliance. Even when not logged in with MindYourPass. Provides organizations with full insight into behavior and risks.
Password Management ✅ Encrypted storage in a digital vault. ✅ Passwords are calculated in real time, not stored → less risk in case of hacks.
Storage of non-password items (files, credit cards, biometrics, shared accounts) ✅ Broad storage functionality for various types of data. ✅ Also supports other data and shared accounts, without storage in a vault.
Password Policy & Enforcement ⚠️ Policy possible, but only effective if passwords are stored in the vault. ✅ Policy is built into the technology itself and is technically enforced for 100% of users.
Shadow IT Detection ❌ No visibility into tools outside the vault. ✅ Automatically detects all domains employees log into → full insight into Shadow IT.
European Solution ❌ American company, subject to the CLOUD Act. ✅ Dutch solution

From storage to adoption

Without a doubt, Bitwarden is a strong password manager: open source, reliable, and affordable. Many organizations choose it because of its transparency and flexibility. However, the comparison above shows that even the best vault won't solve the problem of weak and reused passwords.

A standard password manager mainly helps store and enter passwords, but says little about whether and how employees use the tool. If usage is not measured or enforced, passwords remain outside the vault. Only when the password policy itself is also enforced by software can you really prevent weak and reused passwords.

MindYourPass offers everything a traditional password manager can do, but adds something fundamental: insight and enforceability. The technology is designed in such a way that safe behavior occurs naturally, not depending on discipline, but on design. For example, the focus is shifting from storage to adoption, and from well-intentioned policies to actual compliance.

Measuring: knowing what's really happening

Without insight, password policy remains a matter of trust. MindYourPass shows how employees actually use passwords: how strong they are, whether they are being reused and where risks arise. This is done completely anonymously, but organization-wide - so that security teams can see whether policies work and where adjustments are needed.

Improving: from numbers to behavior

The insights from the measurement form the basis for targeted action. MindYourPass sees which applications employees still use weak or reused passwords for, and creates a personal risk profile for everyone. Based on this, employees receive a to-do list during onboarding: step by step, providing the most important business applications with a strong, unique password.

The password manager actively supervises this process. While logging in, MindYourPass provides immediate feedback on the strength and origin of passwords, with clear instructions for improving them. In this way, safe behavior is not only stimulated, but also made concrete - per user, per account, and with measurable results.

Enforcement: technology takes over

MindYourPass makes safe behavior not only possible, but also mandatory - in a smart, user-friendly way. The technology ensures that employees can only log in with strong, unique passwords. No extra actions, no detours, just safe by design.

European solution with data minimization

MindYourPass has been fully developed in the Netherlands. Data is stored in the EU, and because passwords aren't stored, there's not even anything to leak.

For organizations that work within European legislation - such as governments, healthcare institutions and educational organizations - this is an important distinction with American solutions such as Bitwarden.

In summary: the Bitwarden alternative that does achieve 100% adoption

  • Bitwarden is an excellent tool for individual users and small teams who are disciplined in using the password manager.
  • Mind Your Pass is it Bitwarden alternative for organizations who want full adoption, insight and enforcement.

It combines measurement, improvement and enforcement in one integrated approach - so that safe behavior is no longer dependent on good intentions, but is simply technically guaranteed
